Pianadelphia - Philadelphia Jazz Tribute volume one
Recorded at TurtleStudios in Philadelphia, PIANADELPHIA is a celebration of fourteen pianists who live and work in the Philadelphia area. It is also a tribute to the history of Jazz in Philadelphia — the first great American art form, in the first great American city. Each pianist performs a composition by a legendary Philly Jazz artist, with many of the city's most accomplished players showcased alongside its more recent virtuosos.
"Like a set of fine China, Pianadelphia is characterized by its craftsmanship, delicacy and sheer beauty. Each musician shows himself to be an exquisite interpreter of the Jazz piano idiom, demonstrating how spontaneous variations of simple tunes can become memorable compositions in themselves." - AllAboutJazz.com
"Pianadelphia's great!! - Pat Martino
“ This project offers an opportunity for music lovers to appreciate and enjoy the composing skills of Philadelphia’s Jazz Legends, played by talented pianists.” - Jimmy Heath
Smitty - Like A Child
Smitty - Witch Hunt
The best music always seems instantly familiar. Steve Smithie, a New York City guitarist and composer, is a prime example. His music, full of hummable melodies and cinematic soundscapes, tells stories you already seem to know. Yet, you've never heard anything like it. Alternately evoking the banks of the Mississippi delta and some mysterious dark alley, Smitty's songs are filled with whimsical melodies, melancholic reminisces, and loose-limbed grooves. It is music without artifice, speaking so directly it is easy to overlook its complexity.
Todd Horton - Seasons
Todd has performed and recorded with a diverse group of artists including The Spin Doctors, Buddy Miles, Ivan Neville, Winston Grennan, Adam Holzman, African Blue Note and Richard Bona. He was also a member of Ani Difranco's band and appears on her double live album "So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter," and her last full band studio album, "Evolve".
His playing displays an introspective vulnerability, a poetic sense of space and an undeniably romantic lyricism. His writing stretches genre boundaries, establishing an exciting benchmark for the future in instrumental and experimental music.
Hilliard Greene - Alone
Hilliard 'Hill' Greene is an extraordinary musician and composer. For the past sixteen years, he has served as bassist and musical director for the great Jimmy Scott and The Jazz Expressions. Notably, Hill has also played and recorded with Dave Douglas, Charles Gayle, Oliver Lake, Jack Walrath, and Kenny Barron. A rare bassist who not only exemplifies the art of swing through his masterful walking bass lines, Hill brings something entirely new and fresh to the instrument. This album is not currently available on iTunes.
Dirty Lyre - The Jacklight Sessions
Dirty Lyre is a compilation of original songs written by four unique songwriters who live and perform in New York City; Chris Barron, Louie Lepore, Talia Paul, and Steve Smithie. The tracks were recorded on four separate evenings at Jacklight Gallery on E. 7th street, between Ave B and C, in the East Village. The proprietor, Walter Fields, a well known artist and long time gallery owner, sat in on the sessions, listening and painting while the musicians poured out their hearts.
Whatsa - Magica Volume I
Whatsa was a New York City based project comprised of trumpeter Todd Horton and saxophonist Hans Teuber (former Ani Difranco horn section), Spin Doctors drummer Aaron Comess, Harry Belafonte bassist Mamadou Ba, guitarist Teddy Kumpel and keyboardist Pat Daugherty. Rooted in Jazz, Funk, Rock and African Music, their music is an amalgam of styles with a strong improvisational element.
Whatsa - Magica Volume II
Section 31 - Time Traveler
Recorded live in the studio, Time Traveler captures the excitement of Section 31's spontaneous and unpredictable live performance. Hard driving bass lines, killer grooves and edgy soundscapes transport the listener to a whole other dimension. Time Traveler blends the best of Funk, Rock and Jazz into a style that could have only evolved in a city like New York.
Giacomo Aula - The Looking Glass Sessions
Pianist and composer Giacomo Aula was born and raised in Lagonegro, Italy. He has performed and/or recorded with Eliot Zigmund, James Newton, Larry Schneider, Peter Erskine, Enrico Rava, Paul Fresu and a host of Italian Jazz stars. Aula's romantic sensibility and passionate style brings to the classic format of the Jazz quartet a quality reminiscent of the late great Art Tatum. His technical virtuosity, combined with his background and influence by Italian composers such as Nino Rota and Enrico Pieranunzi, gives way to a fresh, compelling and international look at contemporary Jazz.
Brian Charette - Live At Deanna's
Brian and his dynamic trio recorded this rare set of Jazz standards at the now closed Deanna's Restaraunt on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in December, 1999. Live at Deanna's establishes Brian as a mature and original voice and it features his remarkable ability to bring something fresh and inspired to the piano trio format.
African Blue Note - EP
This all-star band has been together since the early 1990's and has performed concerts, festivals and clubs primarily in the New York area. The members have performed and recorded with artists such as Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Cheikh Lo, Papa Wembe, Paul Simon, Jean Luc Ponty, Andre Marie Tala and other African music stars. They can still be seen and heard monthly at Zinc Bar in downtown Manhattan.
